Ghost Town: Film #153 of Film 365

Wednesday 18th April 2012

Director: David Koepp
Year: 2008
Stars: Ricky Gervais, Greg Kinnear, Tea Leoni

I wasn't expecting much from this. When it was released it didn't exactly open to critical acclaim, and I'm not really a huge Gervais fan (I never really did get The Office the way others did). I was mostly just curious.

Perhaps because my expectations were rather low, I actually ended up quite enjoying Ghost Town. Gervais plays Pincus, a dentist who has a near-death experience and ends up being able to see ghosts who want his help. Which all leads to him falling in love with Gwen (Leoni).

It's not a complicated plot by any means, and at times I'd even go so far as to say the film gets rather dull at times (something of an impressive feat for a short movie). But when Ghost Town is being silly, it's actually quite funny. A pleasant surprise, if not the best film out there.

Rating: 3 out of 5

About Me

My photo
I live in Bristol with my husband Dan (who I married in July 2007), my son Joe (born 2012) and daughter Jess (born 2015). I work at UWE (the University of the West of England) in Bristol as a Research and Open Access Librarian. I'm orginally from Exeter, so moving back to Bristol is a bit like coming home - especially as I studied for my undergraduate degree here (also at UWE). I love travelling and movies, although I get to do a lot less of both since the birth of our children. Although we have still managed to fit in holidays to the Isles of Scilly, Chamonix and a summer in California since Joe was born.
