Tropic Thunder: Film #108 of FIlm 365

Tuesday 27th December 2011

Director: Ben Stiller
Year: 2008
Stars: Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr, Jack Black, Steve Coogan

This was another movie I'd read good reviews of, but had quite got around to watching. So it seemed a good choice when I saw it was on TV the day we got home from visiting relatives after Christmas.

Tropic Thunder is, if nothing else, a very different movie. It's also very good at laughing at Hollywood (and therefore itself), which made me happy. Tropic Thunder focuses on a Hollywood movie set, and a group of actors who are trying to make a war movie. They're not doing a very good job, so the director decides to take them into the jungle for real. If things weren't already going wrong, they really start to at this point. Except most of the actors don't seem to notice...

This is a movie with what feels like a properly unique idea - or at least I've never seen anything like it before. It was also properly funny. If you're after something different to make you laugh, this is definitely worth a watch.

Rating: 4 out of 5

About Me

My photo
I live in Bristol with my husband Dan (who I married in July 2007), my son Joe (born 2012) and daughter Jess (born 2015). I work at UWE (the University of the West of England) in Bristol as a Research and Open Access Librarian. I'm orginally from Exeter, so moving back to Bristol is a bit like coming home - especially as I studied for my undergraduate degree here (also at UWE). I love travelling and movies, although I get to do a lot less of both since the birth of our children. Although we have still managed to fit in holidays to the Isles of Scilly, Chamonix and a summer in California since Joe was born.
