Burke and Hare

Director: John Landis
Year: 2010
Stars: Simon Pegg, Andy Serkis, Jessica Hynes, Tim Curry, Isla Fisher, Tom Wilkinson

I was looking forward to seeing this - it looked like a deliciously funny, very dark humoured comedy. However, I also had my reservations. The trailer had me very amused indeed, but I feared I may well have already seen all the best bits.

I was right on both counts. Burke and Hare tells the tale of (you guessed it) William Burke and William Hare - true-life grave robbers, who turned their hand to murder when they began to make money off the bodies they "obtained" by selling them to the medical profession. I'm not sure exactly how much of the movie is true, but I expect it's not far off to say it's roughly 50/50.

The movie does have some amazingly dark, very humorous, moments - but it was also no better than I had been expecting. It lived up to expectations, but only just. And perhaps partially because my expectations weren't that high to begin with.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5

About Me

My photo
I live in Bristol with my husband Dan (who I married in July 2007), my son Joe (born 2012) and daughter Jess (born 2015). I work at UWE (the University of the West of England) in Bristol as a Research and Open Access Librarian. I'm orginally from Exeter, so moving back to Bristol is a bit like coming home - especially as I studied for my undergraduate degree here (also at UWE). I love travelling and movies, although I get to do a lot less of both since the birth of our children. Although we have still managed to fit in holidays to the Isles of Scilly, Chamonix and a summer in California since Joe was born.
