Sherlock Holmes

Director: Guy Ritchie
Year: 2009
Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Mark Strong, Eddie Marson

This could have been so good. You can see the potential. Unfortunately, the obvious plot and overlong running time ruin it. I just got bored.

Holmes and Dr. Watson have just caught Lord Blackwood, a murderer with a penchant for black magic. However, when people start seeing him alive again once Watson has declared him dead, Holmes has to figure out how Blackwood is doing it. There is a subplot with Holmes sort-of love interest Irene Adler, but I'm not sure it's worth mentioning beyond that... it just annoyed me.

There are some nice touches - making Holmes a mad genius is a good idea (and possibly follows the books more closely than previous adaptations - I'm not sure as I've never read anything by Conan Doyle). The end credits are also excellent; one of the best things about the film. However, none of this can detract from the fact that I sat through the middle hour of this bored to tears.

About Me

My photo
I live in Bristol with my husband Dan (who I married in July 2007), my son Joe (born 2012) and daughter Jess (born 2015). I work at UWE (the University of the West of England) in Bristol as a Research and Open Access Librarian. I'm orginally from Exeter, so moving back to Bristol is a bit like coming home - especially as I studied for my undergraduate degree here (also at UWE). I love travelling and movies, although I get to do a lot less of both since the birth of our children. Although we have still managed to fit in holidays to the Isles of Scilly, Chamonix and a summer in California since Joe was born.
