Milk

Director: Gus Van Sant
Year: 2008
Stars: Sean Penn, Emile Hirsch, Josh Brolin, Diego Luna, James Franco

This is another Oscar-nominated film that had the potential to really grate, shouting loudly "give me an Oscar". Thankfully, it doesn't. It's incredibly well told, and really brings the world of Harvey Milk and gay America in the 1970s to life.

The 1970s were a tough time for gay citizens in the US - people were voting to allow them to not keep their jobs, and basically not have the same sort of rights as the "normal" folks. This film tells the tale of Harvey Milk, a gay man from New York who moved to San Francisco to live in the Castro where we he was able to be openly gay. Deciding he'd done nothing with this life up to the age of 40, he chooses to run for city supervisor so that there is at least one gay voice in office.

The film is very well told and engaging. And if the end is unsatisfying in some ways, this is no fault of the films, but simply of the true story that it tells.

Rating: 5 out of 5

About Me

My photo
I live in Bristol with my husband Dan (who I married in July 2007), my son Joe (born 2012) and daughter Jess (born 2015). I work at UWE (the University of the West of England) in Bristol as a Research and Open Access Librarian. I'm orginally from Exeter, so moving back to Bristol is a bit like coming home - especially as I studied for my undergraduate degree here (also at UWE). I love travelling and movies, although I get to do a lot less of both since the birth of our children. Although we have still managed to fit in holidays to the Isles of Scilly, Chamonix and a summer in California since Joe was born.
