The Secret Life of Bees: Film #43 of Film 365

Monday 6th June 2011

Director: Gina Prince-Bythewood
Year: 2008
Stars: Dakota Fanning, Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, Sophie Okonedo, Paul Bettany

I was looking for something relaxing and sweet to watch. This seemed to fit the bill, so I thought I'd give it a go. It was exactly what I was expecting it to be - a feel good, vaguely sentimental movie.

The Secret Life of Bees is set in 1960s USA (I'm always a sucker for those cornfields bathed in golden sunshine), and follows Lily Owen (Fanning) as she runs away from her father (Bettany), maid Rosaleen (Hudson) in tow. She finds August Boatwright (Queen Latifah) and her family living in a pink house and making honey, and decides to try living with them.

Ignoring the fact that the likelihood of a black family living in a huge house like this in '60s America is pretty unlikely, this is an easy, relaxing movie to watch. You'll love it if you're 12 - or me, and wishing life was like it is in the movies. Otherwise you'll probably think it's rather too sweet and sickly and want to leave it for the 12-year old girls.

About Me

My photo
I live in Bristol with my husband Dan (who I married in July 2007), my son Joe (born 2012) and daughter Jess (born 2015). I work at UWE (the University of the West of England) in Bristol as a Research and Open Access Librarian. I'm orginally from Exeter, so moving back to Bristol is a bit like coming home - especially as I studied for my undergraduate degree here (also at UWE). I love travelling and movies, although I get to do a lot less of both since the birth of our children. Although we have still managed to fit in holidays to the Isles of Scilly, Chamonix and a summer in California since Joe was born.
