Strictly Ballroom

Director: Baz Luhrmann
Year: 1992
Stars: Paul Mercurio, Tara Morice, Bill Hunter, Pat Thomson

I've seen this before. Admittedly not for some time, but I enjoy it every time I watch it, and it seemed like a good excuse to be lazy for a couple of hours on a Christmas afternoon!

Paul Mercurio plays the dancer Scott Hastings. He is on track to win the next dancing competition, but wants to dance his way. However, the only person to share his view seems to be Fran (Tara Morice). Unfortunately, she can't dance.

As with all other Baz Luhrmann films, this is a wonderful mix of mad comedy, bright colours and fast editing. For me, it doesn't reach the wonderful heights of Romeo + Juliet or Moulin Rouge, two of his later films (and two of my favourites), but it certainly paves the way for them. I think it's fair to say that without Strictly Ballroom, neither Romeo + Juliet nor Moulin Rouge would be likely to exist.

About Me

My photo
I live in Bristol with my husband Dan (who I married in July 2007), my son Joe (born 2012) and daughter Jess (born 2015). I work at UWE (the University of the West of England) in Bristol as a Research and Open Access Librarian. I'm orginally from Exeter, so moving back to Bristol is a bit like coming home - especially as I studied for my undergraduate degree here (also at UWE). I love travelling and movies, although I get to do a lot less of both since the birth of our children. Although we have still managed to fit in holidays to the Isles of Scilly, Chamonix and a summer in California since Joe was born.
