Igby goes down

Director: Burr Steers
Year: 2002
Stars: Kieran Culkin, Ryan Phillippe, Susan Sarandon, Claire Danes, Jeff Goldblum, Amanda Peet, Jared Harris, Bill Pullman

Well this is an odd film. Even after watching it I'm not sure exactly why it was made or what point it was trying to make - if any.

Igby (Culkin) is a teenager who keeps flunking out of school, apparently due to his unstable family. The movie follows him as his mad mother sends him to military school, and after he runs away. Although not a lot really happens plot-wise, there's plenty to keep you watching as Igby deals with the people around him - this is a character study, not a plot-driven movie.

It's not a bad movie - it's very watchable, and there's nothing to really dislike (except perhaps most of the characters - but not so much you can't stand to watch them), but if the film is trying to say something, it's not clear what - to me, anyway.

Rating: 3 out of 5

About Me

My photo
I live in Bristol with my husband Dan (who I married in July 2007), my son Joe (born 2012) and daughter Jess (born 2015). I work at UWE (the University of the West of England) in Bristol as a Research and Open Access Librarian. I'm orginally from Exeter, so moving back to Bristol is a bit like coming home - especially as I studied for my undergraduate degree here (also at UWE). I love travelling and movies, although I get to do a lot less of both since the birth of our children. Although we have still managed to fit in holidays to the Isles of Scilly, Chamonix and a summer in California since Joe was born.
