Mulan

Director: Tony Bancroft, Barry Cook
Year: 1998
Stars: Ming-Na Wen, Lea Salonga, Eddie Murphy, Gedde Wantanabe, Matthew Wilder

Now this is more like it. Channel Five have been showing Disney movie premieres on a Sunday afternoon for the past few weeks now, and I seem to have been watching most of them. I've sat through some dire sequels, but also managed to catch up on some excellent classics I've never seen before (for some reason, Disney movies kind of passed me by as a child).

I'm pleased to say that Mulan sits squarely in the latter category. An entertaining, involving story with happy, funny and sad parts in equal measure, this is what Disney films should be. The plot follows the girl Mulan, who goes to war (without her families knowledge) in order to save her old, injured father from having to fight.

A beautiful movie with an excellent, engaging storyline. If only Mulan 2 (which is on next week) could live up to this... I know it won't, I know it will be awful, but I also know I'll probably end up watching it anyway, just to check. Hmmm.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5

About Me

My photo
I live in Bristol with my husband Dan (who I married in July 2007), my son Joe (born 2012) and daughter Jess (born 2015). I work at UWE (the University of the West of England) in Bristol as a Research and Open Access Librarian. I'm orginally from Exeter, so moving back to Bristol is a bit like coming home - especially as I studied for my undergraduate degree here (also at UWE). I love travelling and movies, although I get to do a lot less of both since the birth of our children. Although we have still managed to fit in holidays to the Isles of Scilly, Chamonix and a summer in California since Joe was born.
