The 40 Year Old Virgin

Director: Judd Apatow
Year: 2005
Stars: Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Catherine Keener, Romany Maclo, Seth Rogan

There were certain things I was hoping this film wouldn't be, but felt they were liable to be from the title and plot summary. Unfortunately, I was right. I had read a lot of positive reviews about this film, and thought perhaps I was being a little harsh and should give it a go - maybe it really would be funny...

It's not. The title says it all. It's about a man who is a 40 year old virgin, and is trying to lose his virginity. It is simply a poor excuse for lots of swearing and crass toilet humour. And the ending (which is pretty damn obvious) does not make up for all the awful jokes that have come before.

Juxtaposed with an episode of The Big Bang Theory, which I watched straight after the film, (which also contained plenty of toilet humour, but this time it was funny) I began to wonder why I had wasted 2 hours on this utter banality when I could have watched the same episode of The Big Bang Theory 4 times over and still be laughing at it more than I laughed during this film... I was going to give this 2 stars out of 5, but the more I think about it the more it annoys me. It gets 1.

Rating: 1 out of 5

About Me

My photo
I live in Bristol with my husband Dan (who I married in July 2007), my son Joe (born 2012) and daughter Jess (born 2015). I work at UWE (the University of the West of England) in Bristol as a Research and Open Access Librarian. I'm orginally from Exeter, so moving back to Bristol is a bit like coming home - especially as I studied for my undergraduate degree here (also at UWE). I love travelling and movies, although I get to do a lot less of both since the birth of our children. Although we have still managed to fit in holidays to the Isles of Scilly, Chamonix and a summer in California since Joe was born.
