Director: Mike Leigh
Year: 2010
Stars: Jim Broadbent, Ruth Sheen, Lesley Manville, Oliver Maltman, Peter Wight, David Bradley
In contrast with The Invention of Lying, I really wanted to see Another Year. It had got fairly good reviews (from memory), and I had wanted to watch it back when it was released at the cinema. Also in contrast to Another Year, this wasn't a pleasant surprise. It was truly rubbish, very boring and it felt as if I was wasting a year watching it.
Tom (Broadbent) and Gerri (Sheen) are a relatively normal couple, with a relatively normal son, who spend a lot of time in their allotment. There's a reason for this - everybody they know is a horrible weirdo who you can feel no sympathy for whatsoever. Queue lots of scenes where you hate half the characters, interspersed with lots of random shots of an allotment and fruit. I haven't seen a more boring movie for some time.
Rating: 1.5 out of 5
