Sideways

Monday 6th May 2013

Director: Alexander Payne
Year: 2004
Stars: Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church, Virginia Madsen, Sandra Oh

Having first watched this not long after it was released, I knew basically what I was getting. However, the first time I saw Sideways, I loved it. This time around I was less enthusiastic. Whether this was because I just wasn't in the mood, my tastes have changed, or I'm just in a different place in life generally, I don't really know. But somehow, the characters all felt a little, well, frustrating. Not that they didn't when I first saw this - but now they were just more, well, annoying.

Sideways focuses on two men who head off on a roadtrip to the vineyards of California, as a kind of week-long stag-do for Jack (Haden Church), who is about to get married. And from there it all gets a little silly, and well, drunken.

Still an interesting movie, and worth a watch if you haven't seen it, but perhaps less insightful second time round.

Rating: 3 out of 5

About Me

My photo
I live in Bristol with my husband Dan (who I married in July 2007), my son Joe (born 2012) and daughter Jess (born 2015). I work at UWE (the University of the West of England) in Bristol as a Research and Open Access Librarian. I'm orginally from Exeter, so moving back to Bristol is a bit like coming home - especially as I studied for my undergraduate degree here (also at UWE). I love travelling and movies, although I get to do a lot less of both since the birth of our children. Although we have still managed to fit in holidays to the Isles of Scilly, Chamonix and a summer in California since Joe was born.
