Sparkle: Film # 48 of Film 365

Tuesday 28th June 2011

Director: Tom Hunsinger, Neil Hunter
Year: 2007
Stars: Shaun Evans, Bob Hoskins, Stockard Channing, Amanda Ryan, Lesley Manville, Anthony Head

I have no idea why I recorded this. Presumably I'd seen a good review for the movie in a TV guide. Admittedly I ended up watching it nearly a year after I recorded it, so it's probably no surprise that I don't remember why I recorded it. However, I also knew basically nothing about the film. I only ended up watching it because Dan picked it, deciding it sounded like it might be good.

Well, Sparkle is basically all about Sam (Shaun Evans), and his relationships with Sheila (Channing), Kate (Ryan), Vince (Hoskins) and his mother (Manville). To say more would give away most of the plot.

This is a movie that could easily have turned into British melodrama. It is a very British film with very British humour, but if you get that sort of humour, this is a funny, gentle, sweet comedy - worth a watch.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5

About Me

My photo
I live in Bristol with my husband Dan (who I married in July 2007), my son Joe (born 2012) and daughter Jess (born 2015). I work at UWE (the University of the West of England) in Bristol as a Research and Open Access Librarian. I'm orginally from Exeter, so moving back to Bristol is a bit like coming home - especially as I studied for my undergraduate degree here (also at UWE). I love travelling and movies, although I get to do a lot less of both since the birth of our children. Although we have still managed to fit in holidays to the Isles of Scilly, Chamonix and a summer in California since Joe was born.
