The Calcium Kid

Director: Alex De Rakoff
Year: 2004
Stars: Orlando Bloom, Omid Djalili, Rafe Spall

This film has had pretty bad reviews. But, well, it's got Orlando in it, and I wanted something relaxed and easy to watch when I got home from work.

The film follows Jimmy Connelly (Bloom) as he manages to knock out a boxer days before his fight with the world heavyweight boxing champion. This is due to the fact that Jimmy drinks lots of milk, making his bones rock-hard. In order to make sure there is a fight, Jimmy ends up being the one to fight the heavyweight champion.

This film isn't really as bad as many of the reviews made out. It perhaps doesn't succeed in a number of ways, but I could certainly see what it was trying to do. As long as you're not expecting a masterpiece, it's relatively easy-watching, harmless Friday night fun!

About Me

My photo
I live in Bristol with my husband Dan (who I married in July 2007), my son Joe (born 2012) and daughter Jess (born 2015). I work at UWE (the University of the West of England) in Bristol as a Research and Open Access Librarian. I'm orginally from Exeter, so moving back to Bristol is a bit like coming home - especially as I studied for my undergraduate degree here (also at UWE). I love travelling and movies, although I get to do a lot less of both since the birth of our children. Although we have still managed to fit in holidays to the Isles of Scilly, Chamonix and a summer in California since Joe was born.
